About Spring Valley Chorus

We sing light, entertaining, barbershop-style music in contemporary and traditional arrangements.  Barbershop music is a unique American art form sung a cappella (with no instruments).  Spring Valley Chorus exists to provide excellent musical performances in our community and surrounding areas by educating our members in singing 4-part harmony in the Barbershop style through regular weekly rehearsals, annual competition and performance opportunities. 

We are talented and friendly women who love to sing and are dedicated to maturing musically in a fun and joyful atmosphere.  We preserve and promote this form of singing as members of Lake Michigan Region 3 of Sweet Adelines International.

Performance

The main purpose of Spring Valley Chorus is to get out and sing for our community. We sing at annual shows, a number of community events, and at an annual competitions. We also perform Singing Telegrams around Valentines Day. We are available to sing at your next function or event. Education

In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acapella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year, we receive coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.

Competition

In the spring of every year, Spring Valley Chorus participates in the Region 3 chorus competition. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the fall in a city selected each year. Spring Valley Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines, International.

Sweet Adelines International is a highly respected worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance. This independent, nonprofit music education association is one of the world's largest singing organizations for women.

Members extend over five continents and belong to more than 500 choruses and 1,200 quartets. Today's Sweet Adelines choruses and quartets sing exciting a cappella, four-part harmony music, barbershop style. The music includes special arrangements of today's ballads and upbeat songs, popular show tunes, and even jazz. Members say that singing the powerfully balanced sounds of barbershop harmony provides a rich, rewarding experience.

Sweet Adelines International is governed by an elected board of directors and administered by a professional staff in Tulsa, Okla. The staff manages a wide range of programs and member services, including:

* The Pitch Pipe, a quarterly magazine
* Digital mastering of audio and video productions
* Music publishing services, with hundreds of barbershop arrangements in print
* Distribution of compact discs and DVD's for entertainment and education
* Convention planning for meetings attended by 8-10,000 people annually
* International Sales, an educationally focused inventory of products and materials
* Education programs such as Directors Certification Program, Arrangers Program, Faculty Program and Judging Program
* Contests in quartet and chorus singing at regional and international levels
* International champions named in chorus, quartet, and young women aged 25 and under divisions at International Convention each Fall
